Germany approves four additional MEKO A-200 frigates for Navy

The German Bundestag’s Budget Committee has approved the procurement of four additional MEKO A-200 DEU frigates from ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). This decision expands the existing anti-submarine warfare program from four to eight vessels, with a total investment for the second batch valued at approximately 5.3 billion euros.

The expansion follows the cancellation of the previous F126 frigate program, which was terminated due to performance issues and delays involving the Dutch contractor Damen Naval. The shift to the MEKO A-200 class is intended to rapidly address capability gaps in the German Navy and fulfill NATO obligations.

The new vessels are designed for anti-submarine warfare and will be deployed to secure the North Sea, Baltic Sea, Atlantic, and the High North. The first of the eight ships is scheduled for delivery in 2029, with subsequent units expected to follow in close succession to leverage established production lines and supply chains.
