German Bundestag passes right‑to‑repair law

On 25 June the German Bundestag approved legislation to implement the EU Directive 2024/1799 on the right to repair, which will become effective on 31 July 2026. The law adds new provisions to the Civil Code, giving consumers the right to have faulty products repaired during the warranty period and extending the warranty by twelve months after a repair.

Manufacturers must make spare parts and repair information available at reasonable prices for the covered product categories, such as refrigerators, smartphones and other items subject to the Ecodesign regulation. The obligations also apply to non‑EU manufacturers through importers, and an online platform will be created to help consumers locate repair services. The law does not include a repair tax reduction or a mandatory repair bonus, but the government has been asked to examine possible financial incentives.
