German Bundestag security questioned after politician's clan contacts
Contradictory accounts have emerged regarding the contacts of Ferat Koçak, a Die Linke member of the Bundestag, who recently resigned from the parliamentary Committee on Internal Affairs. While Koçak previously described his interactions with clan leader Issa Remmo as “naive and overwhelmed,” claiming he was unaware of the exact nature of the contacts, Remmo has publicly disputed this version.
Remmo alleges that Koçak visited his office personally and engaged in discussions lasting over an hour regarding politics, socialism, and expropriation. The controversy is significant because the Committee on Internal Affairs is a key security body that oversees agencies such as the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) and the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, granting members access to confidential intelligence reports.
In response to the incident, Green Party internal affairs expert Konstantin von Notz has called for enhanced security mechanisms within the Bundestag. Von Notz warned that the election of individuals with problematic networks poses a challenge to parliamentary integrity and the protection of state secrets, describing the current period as a test for the resilience of the democratic legal order.
