German Bundestag to Debate Left Party Leader's CDU‑AfD Comparison

Left Party chairman Luigi Pantisano sparked controversy after telling the Bild newspaper that there is "no difference between the CDU, which pursues fascist politics, the AfD or fascists themselves." He later apologized, calling the remark "short‑changed and wrong in this form."

The federal government has asked the Bundestag to schedule a debate on his statements during an upcoming Current Hour, with CDU/CSU parliamentary manager Steffen Bilger describing the comments as unacceptable and the apology as not credible. A debate date, likely Wednesday, is being arranged.

The incident highlights internal tensions within the Left Party and comes ahead of the September state election in Saxony‑Anhalt, where the AfD leads the polls and the CDU has ruled out any coalition with either the Left or the AfD.
