German Bundestag to introduce official AI chatbot by late 2026
The German Bundestag plans to introduce its own AI chatbot for members of parliament and administration by the end of 2026. The tool is intended to assist with routine tasks such as audio transcription, drafting documents, and preparing speeches, rather than replacing human labor. Bundestag Vice President Andrea Lindholz (CSU) emphasized that the chatbot is a supportive tool designed to increase efficiency and security, helping to curb the use of unmanaged 'shadow AI' within the institution.
Lindholz also cautioned against members of parliament delivering speeches that are entirely generated by AI. She argued that citizens have a right to hear the personal thoughts, emotions, and political stances of their representatives, noting that purely AI-generated text lacks the human touch and individual character essential to political debate.
Beyond the federal level, various German institutions are integrating AI. The Federal Employment Agency has launched 'Klara,' an AI voice assistant to handle telephone inquiries, while the CDU in Haltern is exploring AI applications to alleviate administrative burdens caused by staff shortages. Additionally, the company Drees & Sommer is developing AI solutions to accelerate building permit processes.
