German businesses face tax deadlines and data sovereignty concerns
Small businesses and self-employed professionals in Germany are being advised to finalize tax planning before the December 31 deadline. To benefit from tax deductions and depreciation, investments in equipment and business assets must be ready for use within the current calendar year. Experts emphasize that while tax advantages can support economic investments, tax considerations alone should not justify poor business decisions.
Separately, German law firms, medical practices, and medium-sized enterprises are increasingly moving data storage from US-based cloud providers to domestic hosting. This shift is driven by legal concerns regarding the US CLOUD Act, which allows US authorities to access data regardless of server location. Compliance with professional secrecy laws, such as §203 StGB, and data protection regulations is prompting businesses to seek providers without US parent companies to ensure greater legal certainty.
