German Cancer Research Finds Overweight and Genetics Drive Cancer Risk

A study by the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) using data from the UK Biobank on 458,000 participants found that excess body weight, especially abdominal fat, could be responsible for more than ten percent of all cancer cases. By incorporating waist circumference and waist‑to‑hip ratio rather than relying solely on BMI, the analysis showed a stronger link between obesity and cancer incidence.

In a separate DKFZ‑led international research project, mouse experiments demonstrated that an individual's genetic makeup strongly influences how tumors develop, even when exposed to the same carcinogen. Although the tumors followed different genetic routes, they ultimately activated the same MAPK signaling pathway. These findings highlight the interplay between genetics and environmental factors and may advance personalized cancer medicine.
