German caravanning market faces decline in motorhome and caravan registrations
The German caravanning market is experiencing a significant downturn, according to data from the Caravaning Industrie Verband (CIVD). In the first nine months of 2026, new registrations for motorhomes fell by 7.2 percent, totaling 57,890 units, while caravan registrations dropped by 4.8 percent to 15,396 units.
The decline accelerated sharply in the third quarter, particularly for motorhomes, which saw a 22.2 percent decrease compared to the previous year. This segment is considered especially risky for manufacturers and dealers because it requires significantly more capital to finance base vehicles, which cost approximately 20,000 euros each.
Industry experts suggest that manufacturers overestimated demand, leading to an oversupply of vehicles. This surplus is particularly problematic for stock that has remained unsold for more than 24 months, as these units often require heavy discounts and expensive maintenance to clear.
