German Catholic Bishops condemn AfD and rising antisemitism

At the conclusion of their autumn plenary assembly in Fulda, the German Bishops' Conference issued a strong condemnation of the AfD and rising antisemitism in Germany.

Heiner Wilmer, Chairman of the German Bishops' Conference and Bishop of Münster, warned that the AfD's potential participation in government, specifically in Saxony-Anhalt, would represent a 'paradigm shift.' He stated that the party's values are diametrically opposed to the Christian view of God and humanity and question the fundamental values of social coexistence.

Wilmer noted that approximately 30 percent of Catholics in eastern Germany voted for the AfD. The Church expressed full solidarity with Bishop Gerhard Feige and the Diocese of Magdeburg. Additionally, the leadership indicated they are preparing for potential institutional disruptions, such as the possible cessation of church tax collection, should the AfD assume regional government responsibilities.
