German CDU urges cuts to social spending and tighter finances in Lower Saxony and Hanover

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Germany is calling for stricter financial discipline and reductions in social benefit outlays. In the Hanover region, CDU regional faction leader Bernward Schlossarek warned that “the finance officer is right to point to rising social expenses and the difficult financial situation of municipalities,” and urged the region to eliminate double structures, improve efficiency and focus on core tasks.

In Lower Saxony, CDU state chairman Sebastian Lechner argued that “we must still pass bold reforms to lower costs for the states and municipalities,” calling for cuts to youth welfare, care assistance and disability integration services. Both leaders say current spending is unsustainable and that further reforms are needed beyond recent federal‑state agreements.
