German cemeteries adapt to burial trends and legal resting periods

In Lünen, the municipal cemetery Lünen-Süd will see the removal of several row graves in 2027. This follows the expiration of the legally mandated 25-year resting period. Once this period ends, the usage rights for these specific graves expire automatically and cannot typically be extended. The city has notified relatives that they have until February 26, 2027, to remove plants, monuments, or other items from the affected sites before they are leveled for future occupancy.
