German cemeteries conduct mandatory gravestone stability inspections
Cemeteries in Linkenheim-Hochstetten and Landau are conducting annual stability inspections of gravestones to ensure visitor safety. These checks are required by law and professional accident prevention regulations to mitigate risks from frost, rain, soil subsidence, and root growth, which can destabilize heavy monuments without visible damage.
In Linkenheim-Hochstetten, inspections are scheduled from August 24 to 28, 2026, using a specialized company to perform technical assessments. In Landau, a building expert will conduct checks between August 17 and 21, 2026.
Under German law and Federal Court of Justice rulings, cemetery operators must fulfill their duty of care by performing these annual checks. However, the legal responsibility for the stability of a grave and the prevention of accidents remains with the authorized users of the grave site. If defects are found, cemetery administrations will notify the responsible parties in writing to rectify the hazard.
