Germany's federal government is weighing a nomination of Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel for the post of European Central Bank (ECB) president, amid speculation that current ECB chief Christine Lagarde could step down before the end of her term. Discussions in Berlin involve finance minister Lars Klingbeil, who backs Nagel, while Chancellor Friedrich Merz has not yet taken a public stance.

Although officials assess Nagel’s chances as modest, the candidacy is viewed as a strategic move to strengthen Germany’s negotiating position for other key ECB roles, such as the chief economist seat.
