German Chambers flag apprenticeship skill gaps and trainee shortages

The IHK Lippe survey of 179 local companies shows that almost one‑half could not fill all apprenticeship places in the past year, and 94% report deficits in basic competencies of school leavers, especially in German, mathematics, concentration, motivation and resilience. The chamber warns that the upcoming "Abiturientenlücke" in 2026, caused by the return to a nine‑year Gymnasium, will reduce the number of graduates with university‑entrance qualifications and increase competition for skilled workers.

In Rhineland‑Palatinate, the IHK‑Arbeitsgemeinschaft announced roughly 9,200 new apprenticeship contracts for the 2026 start, confirming the continued popularity of dual training despite a decline in school‑leaver numbers. Nevertheless, many positions remain unfilled as firms cite insufficient qualifications and a rise in youths without completed schooling. IHK officials Svenja Jochens and Dr. Holger Bentz stress the need for systematic early vocational guidance to align young people’s skills with apprenticeship requirements.
