Manfred Weber urges Union and SPD to agree on German presidential candidate

Political leaders in Germany are intensifying pressure to resolve the succession of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The Federal Assembly is scheduled to hold the election on January 30, 2027.

Manfred Weber, Deputy Chairman of the CSU and President of the European People's Party, has called for the Union (CDU/CSU) and the SPD to agree on a joint candidate within the next four weeks. Weber seeks clarity before the CSU party congress scheduled for October 23-24 in Munich. He has explicitly endorsed Ilse Aigner, the President of the Bavarian State Parliament, citing her political experience and ability to unify the country.

Other political figures are also weighing in on the process. SPD Parliamentary Manager Dirk Wiese has urged a rapid decision, while CDU General Secretary Franziska Hoppermann noted that a decision is expected following the autumn state elections. Hoppermann expressed openness to a female successor but emphasized that merit should remain the primary criterion. Experts suggest that the Union and SPD hold a significant majority of approximately 50 votes in the upcoming election.
