German Chancellor Merz gifts Trump a German football jersey with flawed numbering
At the recent G7 summit, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz presented US President Donald Trump with an Adidas Authentic home jersey of the German national football team, intended to mark Trump as the 47th president. The €150 jersey was sourced from a Berlin Adidas store, but the original outfit could not complete the embroidery before Merz’s departure, so a different sport shop supplied a replacement. The replacement jersey’s number 47 lacks the small DFB logo and the white strokes inside the black digits are arranged differently, prompting media to label the gift a “fake‑flock” item.
German officials confirmed the jersey is genuine in material but acknowledged the discrepancy in the numbering detail, noting the mistake does not constitute a diplomatic incident.
