Germany raises alert over Russian sabotage threats

The German military, the Bundeswehr, has officially raised its threat level regarding Russian sabotage to 'significant' (Bravo category), marking the first time this classification has been used. This decision follows recent drone-related incidents, including a failed explosive drone attack at Leipzig/Halle airport in August and the discovery of a drone near the Wunstorf military airbase in September.

Internal documents suggest that Russia possesses both the capability and an intensified intention to target German military facilities and its partners, such as Ukraine, to weaken political and social support for Kyiv. The use of drones as kinetic weapons is viewed as a crossing of a previously anticipated 'red line' regarding lethal intent.

Separately, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has warned that Russia’s objectives extend beyond territorial gains in Ukraine to the destabilization of the entire European political order. Merz emphasized that Russia fears democracy and open societies, urging European allies to strengthen the NATO pillar and increase defense spending, with some nations prepared to invest up to 3.5% of their GDP.
