German cheese market sees rising household consumption

At the Käse-Star 2026 congress in Cologne, industry experts discussed the evolving German cheese market. Kerstin Keunecke of the Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) reported that private households are increasing their cheese consumption, following a decline during the 2022 inflation period. She noted that cheese represents approximately half of all household spending on dairy products.

Market data shows that self-service retail dominates the sector, accounting for 90 percent of cheese sales. While sales at traditional service counters have declined, Keunecke highlighted the long-term upward trend in consumption and production.

Retailer Benjamin Haase of Rewe Haase urged the industry to better leverage the protein content of cheese to meet modern consumer trends. He argued that while other dairy products like protein-enriched quark are seeing high demand, the cheese industry has yet to fully capitalize on its natural protein advantages to move beyond a niche market position.
