German Chef Johann Lafer Discusses Finances Amid Ongoing Tax Scandal and Cancer Treatment

Johann Lafer, the 68‑year‑old German TV chef, spoke to the Süddeutsche Zeitung about his financial situation following the tax‑evasion case that began with a 2014 complaint by a former housekeeper. Two years later a court convicted him of tax fraud, imposing a one‑year prison sentence and a substantial fine, which severely damaged his public image.

Since being diagnosed with lymph‑node cancer in January 2024, Lafer has undergone several cycles of chemotherapy but continues to work in the kitchen. He described his current state as “still in the middle” of the financial fallout, saying he has not fully repaid his debts and hopes his family can find peace. Lafer emphasized that the combination of the legal and health challenges makes the situation doubly difficult, yet he remains determined to keep working.
