German chemical industry business climate improves in September

The business climate in the German chemical industry improved in September for the second consecutive month. According to the Ifo Institute, the industry's business climate index rose to 5.5 points, up from -2.6 points in August. Companies reported a positive assessment of their current business situation at 8.8 points, while business expectations shifted from -15.0 to 2.3 points.

This recovery is being driven by exports and orders from the manufacturing sector, as well as increased government spending on defense and infrastructure. However, experts warn that the recovery remains fragile. Much of the improved price competitiveness is attributed to temporary factors, such as supply chain disruptions and production outages in the Gulf region.

Structural challenges persist, including high cost levels and a very low order backlog. Consequently, companies are planning further job cuts, and the industry continues to face significant location-based disadvantages in Germany.
