German chemical industry shows sharp improvement in business climate

The German chemical industry experienced a sharp improvement in business climate during August, marking a significant turnaround from previous months of weak performance. According to a report by the ifo Institute in Munich, the index measuring business sentiment in the sector rose from minus 26.3 points in July to minus 2.4 points in August.

For the first time in four years, companies provided a positive assessment of the current business situation, with the corresponding index climbing from minus 14.6 to plus 11.6 points. Future expectations also improved, rising from minus 37.2 points to minus 15.5 points.

These results align with a broader slight recovery in the German economy. German GDP grew by 0.3 percent in the second quarter compared to the previous quarter, which was 0.1 percentage points higher than initially estimated. Chancellor Friedrich Merz noted that the economy is showing signs of recovery, stating, “Three years of recession are behind us, now we are growing again.”
