German child‑rights experts warn against forcing kids into sports
Experts in sport pedagogy and child law argue that children have a right under Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child to choose their leisure activities. Forcing a child into football practice, swimming lessons or other organised sport would breach that right and could be deemed unlawful, according to Professor Alfred Richartz.
They advise parents to act as advocates for their children’s wellbeing, supporting participation only when the child shows genuine interest. Over‑pressure can undermine resilience, leading to fatigue, withdrawal or health complaints. Guidance recommends encouraging activities within the child’s “zone of proximal development”, offering small successes and viewing mistakes as learning opportunities.
Both articles stress a balanced approach: provide opportunities for physical activity and skill development, but respect the child’s autonomy and emotional needs.
