German churches develop strategic framework for wartime preparedness

The Catholic and Evangelical churches in Germany have developed a joint strategic framework to address emergency and wartime circumstances. Titled ‘Framework Concept for Pastoral Care and Acute Intervention in States of Tension, Alliance, and Defense’, the working document defines the role of religious communities in the event of NATO Article 5 activation.

Aligned with the German Ministry of Defense’s ‘Operationsplan Deutschland’, the plan views Germany as a central NATO logistics hub. The churches intend to provide spiritual and psychological support, including military and hospital chaplaincy for wounded soldiers and medical staff, assistance to families receiving notification of casualties, and support for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

For the civilian population, the churches plan adapted services and prayer meetings focused on maintaining unity and advocating for peace. While the churches represent over 36 million believers, the move has faced criticism from some within religious circles who argue it subjects the church to state and military logic.
