German churches host World Cup 2026 public viewings as traffic authority issues fan driving guidelines

Across Cologne and other German cities, evangelical congregations are organizing free public‑viewing events for the opening matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Churches such as Bensberg, the Friedenskirche, Emmauskirche and the Lutherkirche will broadcast games on large screens, provide food and beverages, and limit attendance with a ticket‑per‑person system. The events aim to combine football enthusiasm with community fellowship.

The German motoring association ACV has released safety recommendations for fans decorating their vehicles for the tournament. While car‑mounted flags, scarves and mirror ornaments are permitted, they must not obstruct the driver’s view or become loose at high speeds. The association warns that violations can lead to fines, points on licences and hazards for other road users, and it reiterates standard traffic rules for spontaneous post‑match car parades and the use of horns or flashing lights.
