German churches promote ecumenical wedding services
Catholic and Protestant churches are working to modernize the perception of religious ceremonies through various initiatives in Germany. At the 'Your Wedding Party' trade fair in Fulda, representatives from both denominations hosted a joint ecumenical stand to advise couples on how traditional blessings can be adapted to contemporary lifestyles.
In a separate nationwide initiative titled 'einfach heiraten' (simply marry), held on June 26, 2026, numerous couples participated in spontaneous ceremonies and blessings. In the Regensburg deanery, 26 couples took part in ceremonies held at locations including the Dreieinigkeitskirche and the Wienerhaus garden, supported by live music and volunteer teams.
These efforts aim to present church weddings and blessings as flexible, meaningful alternatives to secular ceremonies, emphasizing personal connection and spiritual foundations over rigid traditions.
