German cities host events for European Mobility Week
German cities Bremerhaven and Viersen are participating in the 2026 European Mobility Week to promote sustainable transportation and safer urban movement.
In Bremerhaven, the local police are hosting a specialized training session for pedelecs (electric bicycles) on September 18. The three-hour course aims to improve riding techniques, increase skill in various traffic situations, and help participants identify potential hazards. The event is free to the public but requires prior registration.
Viersen is focusing on the theme ‘Mobility across Generations,’ with a particular emphasis on school zone safety. Initiatives include the establishment of ‘drop-off zones’ to reduce traffic congestion near schools and the creation of temporary ‘school streets’ where certain roads are closed to vehicle traffic to allow for student activities. Local schools are also engaging in awareness campaigns to encourage parents to use designated zones rather than dropping children off directly in front of school entrances.
