German cities implement new strategies to protect urban trees

In response to increasing heat and drought, German municipalities and expert groups are implementing new strategies to protect urban trees. In Grevenbroich, the BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN faction has proposed the ‘Grevenbroich gießt’ (Grevenbroich waters) initiative. This project aims to allow citizens to assist in watering stressed trees in public spaces during hot summer months. The plan involves using a digital tree register of over 20,000 trees and sensor data to create an online map, guiding residents to specific areas where water is most needed.

Simultaneously, the Working Group on City Trees (Arbeitskreis Stadtbäume), part of GALK, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The group, which includes 25 experts from various municipalities and European partner cities, focuses on selecting resilient tree species, managing pests, and designing water-sensitive urban spaces. Leipzig has been an active participant in this group for over 30 years, contributing to long-term studies that help municipalities select suitable tree varieties to ensure urban cooling and climate resilience.
