German cities introduce cemetery cafes as social meeting spaces

Municipal cemeteries in Germany are increasingly being transformed into social meeting spaces through the introduction of cemetery cafes. These initiatives aim to combat loneliness and provide visitors with spaces for conversation and relaxation.

In Landsberg, a mobile cemetery cafe project called ‘MOCA’, organized by the local Arbeiterwohlfahrt multi-generational house, successfully engaged over 200 visitors. The project, which operates on the second and fourth Sundays of the month, has seen an average of 30 guests per opening and may be extended into the future due to high demand.

In Wiesbaden, a similar model is being permanently established at the Südfriedhof. Following a successful trial period, the cafe will now open on the first and third Sunday of every month from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Wiesbaden Green Space Office, the Martin Luther Congregation, the Volunteer Center, and the Nassau Blind Care association. Mayor Christiane Hinninger noted that the cafe allows visitors to interact or find moments of peace in these green urban retreats.
