German cities Jena and Kaiserslautern pledge full electric bus fleets

The city of Jena approved a policy that all future municipal bus replacements will be battery‑electric, part of a plan to achieve a climate‑neutral public‑transport system by 2035. Diesel buses reaching the end of their service life will be swapped for electric models, with new charging stations at depots and terminals financed through municipal funds and federal and state subsidies.

Kaiserslautern’s public‑transport operator SWK will acquire 16 electric buses for service in 2025‑26, restoring electric bus service after a 40‑year hiatus. The rollout includes a dedicated charging carport and renewable‑energy concepts, supported by a €3.2 million grant from the German Federal Ministry of Transport and co‑financing under the German Recovery and Resilience Plan. Both cities aim to improve air quality, reduce emissions and set a regional example for sustainable mobility.
