German cities launch new community parks and green spaces

New community green spaces are being established in German cities through participatory planning.

In Karlsruhe, the Knielingen district is introducing the “Druidenwäldchen,” the city’s first “PikoPark.” These small-scale urban green areas, measuring between 300 and 500 square meters, focus on biodiversity by using climate-resilient shrubs and native wildflowers to create habitats for insects and animals. The project was developed through cooperation between the Karlsruhe Gardening Office and the Knielingen Citizens' Association, following a workshop where residents contributed design ideas.

In Brühl, the city is opening the “Stadtpark Ost” on October 22, 2026. The park was developed on a former wasteland site previously occupied by a sugar factory. The design integrates historical elements, such as preserved wall sections from the factory, with modern amenities including a calisthenics facility, a multifunctional sports field, and a fitness course. The park also features nature paths and a “Green Classroom” to serve as a meeting point for residents.
