German cities roll out community programmes to fight loneliness

The Greens in Mainz have made combating loneliness a central policy focus. They have organised a series of public events such as a pub quiz and a knitting evening featuring MEP Jutta Paulus, and have promoted “Babbelbänke” – low‑threshold conversation spots – in the Weisenau district. The city council, backed by a coalition of Greens, CDU and SPD, approved a city‑wide action plan titled “Mainz gegen Einsamkeit” to coordinate measures across all districts.

In the neighbouring Vogelsberg region, the local Volkshochschule (adult education centre) has made loneliness its semester theme. Director Kirsten Wegwerth announced a range of courses, workshops and talk‑series aimed at diverse groups – young adults, single parents, low‑income workers and people with migration backgrounds – to create social contacts and reduce isolation. Both initiatives cite recent loneliness barometers that show the issue harms mental and physical health and weakens social cohesion.
