Germany observes Volkstrauertag remembrance ceremonies
Various municipalities across Germany are organizing commemorative events for Volkstrauertag, the national day of remembrance for victims of war and violence, scheduled for November 2026.
In Pritzwalk, the ceremony will include a program by students from the Johann-Wolfgang-von-Goethe-Gymnasium and a speech by Mayor Dr. Ronald Thiel. Heppenheim will hold central services at the Gräffstraße memorial, featuring local choirs and a guard of honor from the Bergstraße reservists. Nümbrecht will host a service at the town hall with participation from local students and Bundeswehr reservists.
In Engerhafe, specific commemorations will focus on the victims of the former Neuengamme subcamp. The program includes a lecture by historian Dr. Oebele Vries regarding the history of the Brockzetel camp and a march to the memorial at the Sandhorster Forst to honor prisoners who died due to forced labor and mistreatment.
