German cities test cobblestone grinding to improve accessibility

German cities are exploring the ‘grinding’ method to improve urban accessibility while preserving historical aesthetics. In Lüneburg, the city has launched a pilot project at the marketplace to test grinding cobblestones. This process involves smoothing the surface of the stones to create wider, flatter paths for wheelchair users, people with walkers, and cyclists without the need to remove the original paving.

Similarly, in Northeim, political factions from the SPD and Greens have submitted a motion to investigate whether smoothing the pedestrian zone's cobblestones is technically feasible. The proposal seeks to assess the impact on grip, drainage, noise, and durability, using similar methods previously tested in Berlin. The goal in both cities is to balance the preservation of historical townscapes with increased mobility and traffic safety.
