German civil servants receive better loan terms than employees

An analysis by the comparison portal Verivox reveals a significant disparity in credit accessibility and costs between German civil servants (Beamte) and employees (Angestellte).

According to the data covering the period from August 2025 to July 2026, 79 percent of civil servants requesting installment loans through Verivox received at least one financing offer. In contrast, only 48 percent of employees were successful in obtaining an offer.

Interest rates also differ substantially. Civil servants saw a median interest rate of 5.59 percent, while employees faced a median rate of 6.58 percent, representing a cost difference of approximately 15 percent. For a sample loan of 20,000 euros with a six-year term, the difference in interest costs amounts to 637 euros.
