German climber Wolfgang Waschiczek dies in Ama Dablam fall

German mountaineer Wolfgang Waschiczek, 57, died after falling approximately 1,500 to 1,700 meters on Ama Dablam in Nepal. The incident occurred on Monday morning during his descent from the 6,814-meter summit, which he had reached on Sunday.

According to Gokul Thapa, head of the trekking company Real Himalaya, Waschiczek was staying at Camp III at an altitude of roughly 6,100 to 6,200 meters. His guide, Sonam Lama, had briefly left the tent to return borrowed equipment, instructing Waschiczek to remain inside until the icy terrain was secured. Upon the guide's return minutes later, the climber had disappeared.

A search operation located his body at an altitude of approximately 4,500 meters. His remains were recovered by helicopter and transported to a hospital in Kathmandu for a post-mortem examination. This tragedy marks the first fatality on Ama Dablam during the current autumn climbing season, which has seen over 300 permit holders.

This event follows other recent climbing fatalities in the region, including the discovery of two Japanese climbers on Gangapurna West last week.
