Borussia Dortmund names squad for Japan tour amid injuries
Borussia Dortmund announced a 20‑player roster for its Japan tour scheduled from 26 July to 2 August, with matches against Cerezo Osaka and FC Tokyo. The list includes forward Carney Chukwuemeka, who was added as a surprise, while newcomer Kaua Prates and several World Cup participants—goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, defenders Ramy Bensebaini and Julian Ryerson, midfielder Marcel Sabitzer, as well as Emre Can and Nico Schlotterbeck—are absent due to injury.
Coach Niklas Kovač, speaking ahead of the new Bundesliga season, emphasized that last season’s progress was strong but the team can still improve technically, tactically and physically. He highlighted the club’s reliance on young players and the need for continuity and development. The pre‑season training camp has already begun, with first‑team players, stars and prospects working together under coach Niko Kovac, while the club also focuses on upcoming transfers.
The tour and pre‑season preparations are part of Dortmund’s broader strategy to give experience to emerging talent and maintain competitive momentum ahead of the domestic campaign.
