German coalition calls for increased investment to combat youth poverty

A coalition of 71 organizations and individuals from civil society and science, including AWO Bayern and AWO Hannover, has issued an appeal titled ‘Do not save on the future – fight youth poverty, ensure participation’ ahead of the 2027 federal budget deliberations.

The group warns against budget cuts to social benefits such as housing allowance (Wohngeld) or the immediate child supplement (Kindersofortzuschlag). Instead, the coalition advocates for increased investment in social infrastructure and poverty-resistant social benefits to secure the future prospects of children, adolescents, and young adults.

Supporters argue that failing to protect young people from poverty jeopardizes social cohesion, democratic participation, and Germany's long-term economic viability. They emphasize that social reforms should not be driven by austerity measures, noting that current youth frustrations in other European nations serve as a warning for German policy.
