German communities host tours of wastewater treatment facilities

Local communities in Germany are hosting public tours of wastewater treatment facilities to increase awareness of environmental protection and infrastructure management.

In Kaufbeuren, nearly 50 people participated in a guided tour organized by the Bund Naturschutz. Led by Dr. Stefan Heiserer, the group learned about the facility's capacity to clean six million cubic meters of wastewater annually and its ability to generate electricity from sewage gas. The tour highlighted the importance of not disposing of solids, medications, or food scraps in drains and showcased the various mechanical and biological purification stages.

In Thalmässing, more than 40 citizens attended a tour organized by the local CSU chapter. The visit, led by operator Hubert Hemmeter, detailed the facility's history and its current role in serving a population equivalent of 5,300. The tour also featured an inspection of a new sludge dewatering plant designed to reduce sludge volume, lower transport costs, and conserve resources. Thalmässing is currently centralizing its wastewater management by connecting smaller local plants to this central facility.
