German companies delay climate neutrality goals due to costs

A recent survey by the Hessian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (HIHK) reveals a significant shift in corporate climate strategies. According to the annual 'Energiewende Barometer', many companies are moving away from specific climate neutrality deadlines, citing high costs for electricity, heat, and fuel, as well as excessive state bureaucracy.

In the state of Hessen, the results show a sharp decline in commitment to the federal government's 2045 climate neutrality target. While nearly half of the surveyed companies previously aimed to meet this milestone, 51.2 percent have now removed specific target years from their objectives. Only 6.5 percent of businesses in the study remain committed to the 2045 deadline.

Felix Heusler, Vice President of the HIHK, noted that the shift is driven by cost pressures limiting investment capacity rather than a rejection of climate protection itself. The survey, which included 417 companies across various sectors, suggests that the economic climate is forcing industries to reconsider the timing of their energy transitions.
