German companies face rising costs and unrest over EU pay transparency rules
A survey by Atradius involving approximately 300 German companies indicates that the EU Pay Transparency Directive is creating significant financial and organizational pressure. Over 52 percent of respondents expect rising labor costs, while 70.2 percent fear internal conflicts and unrest within their workforce due to the new regulations.
The directive aims to ensure equal pay for equal or equivalent work and reduce gender-based wage gaps by increasing transparency in recruitment and expanding information rights for employees. Despite the upcoming requirements, many companies remain unprepared; 41.8 percent have not yet begun preparations, and over 26 percent are unaware of the directive entirely.
While Germany was required to transpose the EU guidelines into national law by June 7, 2026, the deadline has passed. Mandatory reporting is expected to begin in 2027. Currently, 69.7 percent of surveyed companies do not communicate salaries transparently, and only 26 percent disclose starting salaries to applicants.
