German companies face rising hybrid threats, survey shows
A survey by the Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft (IW) involving 1,041 companies reveals that one in five German businesses is experiencing the effects of hybrid threats from abroad. These threats include cyberattacks, espionage, sabotage, and disinformation campaigns intended to influence public opinion.
Large companies with more than 250 employees report being more frequently targeted. The information and communication sectors face the highest risks, followed by energy, water supply, and waste management. While many firms have increased investments in IT security, the IW notes a lack of preparedness regarding energy supply security and emergency plans for critical infrastructure failures.
Siemens Energy CEO Christian Bruch has noted that the threat level has risen significantly over the last 12 to 18 months. He is calling for a civilian operations plan to protect essential services, including electricity, water, and food supplies, to ensure a coordinated response during crises.
