German companies risk shutdown as cloud outage could affect nearly half

A Bitkom survey of 603 German enterprises with at least 20 employees found that 46 percent say a cloud service failure would eventually force them to halt operations, while 9 percent would be unable to continue immediately. Respondents estimated an average outage endurance of about three days (78 hours), with 2 percent expecting only 6‑11 hours of resilience and 21 percent believing they could operate for more than 48 hours.

To mitigate such risks, 82 percent of firms have emergency and restart plans, 75 percent store critical data outside the cloud, and 69 percent monitor cloud services themselves. Other safeguards include contractual agreements with providers (68 percent), diversified system deployments (59 percent), redundant architectures (35 percent), and using a secondary cloud vendor (8 percent). The study underscores the essential role of cloud availability for business continuity, likening it to stable electricity and internet access.
