German conservation initiatives promote orchard meadow biodiversity

Efforts to preserve traditional orchard meadows (Streuobstwiesen) and biodiversity are expanding in Germany through new planting initiatives and professional training programs.

In the Borken district, the Naturfördergesellschaft (NFG) is launching a fruit tree planting campaign starting August 17, 2026. In cooperation with local nurseries, the NFG is offering 20 varieties of old high-stem fruit trees. The initiative provides financial support for up to 25 trees, with the NFG covering half of the costs. Interested parties in the Borken district can apply digitally between August 17 and September 30 to help maintain these habitats, which support up to 3,000 different species.

Additionally, the Landschaftspflegeverband Main-Kinzig-Kreis is offering its 22nd training course for certified landscape orchardists. Starting in December 2026, the program led by expert Josef Weimer will consist of five practical modules held over five weekends. The course covers pruning, variety knowledge, and ecological maintenance to ensure the long-term preservation of these cultural landscapes.
