German conservationists and farmers collaborate to protect rare meadow birds
In different regions of Germany, agricultural workers and conservationists are implementing coordinated strategies to protect rare ground-nesting birds from being harmed during mowing and farming activities.
In the Curauer Moor near Bad Schwartau, teams use thermal imaging drones and manual inspections to locate Corncrakes. This collaborative effort ensures that farmers do not mow sensitive areas until nesting birds and their chicks are safely identified and marked, preventing fatal accidents during the seasonal mowing period.
Similarly, in the Weißenburg-Gunzenburg district, volunteers work alongside members of the Bavarian Farmers' Association to protect Lapwings. Conservationists use spotting scopes to identify nesting sites, which are then marked with stakes to inform farmers of specific areas requiring caution during field work. Both initiatives emphasize that clear communication between landowners and nature protection groups is essential for successful species preservation.
