German conservationists release hundreds of kilograms of eels to protect endangered species

Conservation efforts are underway in northern Germany to bolster the population of the endangered European eel. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the Landesanglerverband (LAV) and energy provider WEMAG released approximately 120 kilograms of young eels into the Warnow river near Marlow. This initiative, supported by WEMAG through the purchase of LAV eel shares, aims to stabilize the ecological balance and preserve regional biodiversity.

In the Lübeck region, anglers and professional fishers collaborated to release 360 kilograms of farm-raised eels into the Trave and Wakenitz rivers. This restocking effort, partially funded by EU subsidies, utilizes farm-reared glass eels to bypass the highly dangerous natural migration from the Sargasso Sea to European river systems. The European eel has been classified as endangered on the international Red List since 2008.
