German construction orders fall 9.2% in July
The German construction industry experienced a significant setback in July 2026. According to data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), real order intake in the main construction sector fell by 9.2% compared to June 2026, when adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects. This decline was observed across both structural engineering, which dropped by 8.4%, and civil engineering, which saw a 10.0% decrease.
Despite the drop in orders, real turnover in the sector rose by 4.6% compared to the previous year, reaching a nominal value of 12.1 billion euros. The number of people employed in the main construction industry increased by 1.5% year-on-year to approximately 545,000.
Felix Pakleppa, Managing Director of the ZDB, warned that order books are thinning and the situation remains fragile. He highlighted concerns regarding the housing market, noting that special funding for EH-55 new builds is expected to expire by the end of 2026, with potential budget cuts for 2027 creating a possible funding gap through summer 2027.
