German consumer agencies outline travel cancellation rights during heatwaves and wildfires

The Verbraucherzentrale Hessen says that an official heat warning alone does not give travelers an automatic right to cancel a booked trip for free. Under German package‑travel law, a free cancellation is only possible when extraordinary circumstances such as closed attractions, damaged infrastructure, active wildfires or a direct threat to life substantially impair the holiday.

For individually booked services – flights, hotels or car rentals – the possibility of a fee‑free cancellation depends on the specific contract terms. Standard travel‑insurance policies do not cover high temperatures, and special concessions, for example the Deutsche Bahn’s temporary heat‑related ticket return offer, are not binding on other providers.

Similar guidance applies to the widespread wildfires affecting southern European destinations such as Sicily, the French Atlantic coast and the area around Izmir. Travelers are urged to monitor official travel advisories, verify the situation continuously and, where possible, rely on the protections offered to package‑travel customers.
