German Consumer Agency Finds Fruit Cereal Labels Mislead About Fruit Content
The Verbraucherzentrale Rheinland‑Pfalz tested 44 fruit‑cereal products and discovered a wide disparity in actual fruit content, ranging from 0.6 % to 40 %. On average the cereals contained about 12 % fruit. Many brands list berries on the front of the pack but the ingredient lists reveal that the bulk of the fruit is made up of raisins (sultanas) and wine berries.
Specific examples include Alnatura’s “Früchtemüsli”, which advertises 40 % fruit yet lists primarily sultanas and wine berries with apricots and figs in unspecified amounts, and Kölln’s varieties, where fruit percentages are either given as a broad range (10–24 % for raisins) or omitted entirely. The study notes that roughly 7.7 million Germans eat cereal for breakfast each day and advises consumers to examine ingredient lists closely.
