German Consumer Group Files Amazon Prime Video Class Action Over Ads and Price Changes
The Saxony Consumer Centre has filed a class‑action lawsuit against Amazon EU S.à.r.l. over the introduction of ads and a perceived decline in streaming quality on Prime Video. The claim argues that Amazon cannot unilaterally worsen contracts for paying customers. The court registration for the collective action closes at 23:59 CET on 9 June 2026; after that date no new participants can join.
More than 291 000 Prime subscribers have already entered the register, seeking compensation of €80‑€150 per person. The first hearing took place on 19 May 2026 before the Bavarian Supreme State Court in Munich. The consumer centre bears all litigation costs and offers a paid assistance service for registration. A parallel class action by the North‑Rhine‑Westphalia Consumer Centre addresses a separate price increase of the Amazon‑Prime subscription.
The lawsuit highlights a broader debate on digital consumer rights in the EU and could set a precedent for how tech platforms may alter service terms.
