Waiting after launch can shave 10‑45% off German smartphone prices
A market analysis by Stiftung Warentest found that postponing the purchase of new smartphones can lead to substantial savings. For Apple iPhones, prices typically remain at launch level for the first 90 days and drop about 10 % by April, with the best deals emerging in July and August. Samsung devices follow a similar pattern, falling to roughly 75 % of the original price by midsummer. The study reports that, depending on the brand, consumers can save between 10 % and 45 % – in some cases up to 40 % of the purchase price – by waiting several months after a model’s release. Flexibility on colour or configuration further increases the chance of finding deeper discounts, though delaying too long may risk stock shortages. The analysis notes that performance improvements between generations have been modest, making the financial benefit of waiting outweigh the prestige of owning the latest model.
